Opinion: Empty pockets for Prom

There is so much money that goes into prom that many people ask “is it worth it”? Of course prom is worth the price, prom is a formal event that only happens once for many students. You can’t expect a formal event with so much meaning to cost you close to nothing.

Prom does not just cost students a load of money, this event is paid for by raising money and money taken from the school. The prices are already considerably lower than they should be thanks to the fundraisers and staff members; to expect prices to be even lower is illogical.

Students may argue that not everyone can pay that much for prom, but preparations can be taken before hand to ensure that you can pay for everything, such as saving up during the school year. I personally don’t have a job and I am part of a poor family, yet I made sure I could get together the money needed to take myself and a date to prom. If I can collect the money, so can any other student.

For those who have absolutely no way to pay for prom there should be an assistance program to help pay for some of the expenses, this is a fair compromise and with proper paper work it could be determined who really can’t pay and who is just not willing.

These kinds of events are just too expensive to not expect to pay for your experience there. Most who complain about not having the money for prom are those who simply didn’t want to put forth the effort to prepare for an expensive event that is expected from the beginning of the year and comes as no surprise.
