UPDATE: Cancer claims life of Kagan Lucas

UPDATE Feb. 7, 7 a.m.:

Kagan Lucas lost her ongoing battle with Leukemia late Thursday night.  Kagan’s mother posted on her carepage, “Kagan went to be with our heavenly father this evening.” Family and friends are leaving comments full of love and support.

Ag teacher Jessica Reeves, whose department adopted Kagan and had been raising money to help with her treatment, wrote in an e-mail to school staff: “It is with a very broken, heavy heart that I share with all of our family that Kagan Lucas passed away this evening from leukemia.  She will be celebrating her 12th birthday tomorrow in heaven with Jesus. I cant even begin to imagine what the Lucas family has been through and the seemingly unbearable road ahead, but we have peace in the fact Kagan is
suffering no more.”

Tomball High School’s FFA program has done a remarkably kind thing: adopted 11-year-old Kagan Lucas.  Why? On September 4, 2013, Kagan was diagnosed with Leukemia, a blood cancer, and admitted straight into MD Anderson Hospital.

What started out as small symptoms quickly evolved into an extremely aggressive form of leukemia, resulting in organ and kidney failure, lung and blood pressure issues, and infections.  She has had to undergo chemotherapy, dialysis, feeding tubes, and so much more, including very rare white blood cell (WBC) transfusions—an occurrence so uncommon that only two hospitals in the U.S. do this.

The ag department heard about Kagan through her father, who is the ag teacher at a school in Katy. Competitors throughout the school year, the two programs are friendly rivals, and students jumped to help when they heard about the teacher’s daughter.

There are multiple ways to help this girl and her family. The hospital bills have put them in quite a financial bind.  You can help out by donating directly to her website at http://www.kaganlucas.org/.  Any amount is appreciated. The THS ag department has also been selling wristbands for $2.

What the family asks for the most, though, is prayers.  Strong with their Christianity, they believe god will aid and heal Kagan through her condition.  If you’d like to send her an email, simply follow the link and type your message in the box.  Kagan also has a ‘prayer pager’ attached to her that buzzes whenever somebody calls (713) 200-0837. When it picks up, enter your zip code and press pound.  A short message will play; but if you don’t feel like listening to it, you may hang up.  Her pager will buzz and let her know she is in your thoughts.  This number is available to call, day or night, and certainly brightens up her day.

You can continue to follow Kagan’s fight through her carepage.  Her mother updates the page almost daily.  You can leave comments under the updates for her to see.
