The FFA animal selection event will be held as a weekend event at 7 am on Sept. 20th at the agricultural barn. This selection is not open to the general public; it is only open to those who have signed up to raise an animal.
All FFA members have a fair chance of selecting an animal due to a randomizer; the randomizer draws numbers in order of who is first to select an animal and who will go last. Everyone has a fair chance at participating in this event.
When selecting an animal, FFA participants look for the least amount of deformities due to any upcoming shows to eventually show the animal they are selecting.
‘’Although getting an animal with a deformity puts you at a slight disadvantage and may affect your chances at success, with the right amount of dedication, it pushes you to work harder and gives you the chance to be the underdog,” Kathryn Johnson said. Kathryn plans to raise a goat for FFA this year.
Selecting an animal is based on personal preference. Some prefer a leaner one to fill out the animal, while someone different may prefer an animal on the heavier side. It all depends on the animal and the person’s preference.
“Selecting an animal is an art,” Duke Vanlue said. “You should start with a blank canvas, and in the end, you should have a masterpiece,” Duke plans to raise a pig for FFA this year.
