Cougars running toward playoffs

Cougars quarterback Austin Sturtzman tossed only six completions, which normally would suggest Tomball struggled in Thursday night’s game against Spring Woods.

Not so.

In fact, the quarterback spent most of the night handing the ball off to a running game that amassed more than 500 yards on the ground, punishing an overmatched Spring Woods in a 56-0 rout.

Dmetri Scott had 163 yards on just three carries – a 54.3 yards per carry average – while Xavier Powell added 153 yards on seven carries, and each rushed for two touchdowns. Scott also caught two passes, including a touchdown.

As unlikely as it seemed after an 0-4 start, the Cougars are now in the driver’s seat for a playoff berth.

While Tomball’s overall record remains a game under .500 at 3-4, the team is now 3-1 in District 22-4A play and in control of their own playoff chances. Up next is a big test against Fort Bend Ridge Point at THS, then a return to Tully Stadium to face Stratford. Each of those teams is 2-1 in district heading into tonight’s games.

With four teams sitting with one loss, all trailing district leader Marshall, it seems likely the Cougars will need to win out to ensure a playoff berth.

The season ends with a showdown against Tomball Memorial.
