Tomball pulls off the comeback: Week 2 recap of all the district games

Dylan Busby, Staff Writer

Tomball traveled to Santa Fe, Friday and found a tough opponent waiting. The Cougars pulled out a 20-19 win thanks to strong defensive play and an incredible performance from QB Hunter Dunn, who ran in the game-winning touchdown in the final minute of the game. Santa Fe is now 0-2 with both games coming at home and falling by one score in both matches. The Cougars evened their record at 1-1.

Caney Creek is the only undefeated team remaining in the district. With a 4 score performance from junior running back Spencer Brandon they beat the lowly Pro-Vision Academy 62-0. Both Magnolia schools couldn’t recapture their week one success with the Bulldogs falling 49-27 against the heavily favored Shadow Creek. Despite the strong performance from star quarterback John Matocha (+400 yards and 3 TDs), the Mustangs failed to hold off the C.E. King comeback in a 40-45 defeat.

After falling 51-20 last year Waller got revenge against former district opponent Brenham upsetting them 28-21. Willis battled it out against Lake Creek Friday winning 37-23 and get their record to 1-1. Lufkin breezed past Nacogdoches 45-7 and now rank 15th in the state. College Station was on a bye this week and will resume play against Huntsville Friday.

The Cougars are back in action Saturday at 2 p.m., here at THS.
