Football is back: Week 1 recap of all the games in the district

Dylan Busby, Staffwriter

Preseason football is here and Tomball football opened the season with a loss to cross town rival Tomball Memorial 41-18. Despite the tough defeat, unlike previous years this game has no playoff implications due to the Wildcats moving up to 6A. The preseason is a time to learn so let’s learn how the other teams in the reshuffled District 8-5A.

The Bulldogs traveled to Barbers Hill and didn’t leave anything back in Magnolia, winning 43-13. Magnolia West traveled to former district opponent Brenham, defeating them for the 3rd straight time in a 61-21 beat down. Brenham will play Waller next week after Waller suffered a 10-point loss at Bryan on Friday. Willis failed to defend their home turf, falling 34-24 against Huntsville.

Newcomers Caney Creek and College Station both got wins Friday, but in two completely different fashions. Caney Creek stomped Creek Lake 39-13 and College Station won a nail-biter at home against Foster. Lufkin, seen as one of the favorites to win state in Class 5A , lost an away match against Longview, the No. 4 team in the state, 35-28.

With the season gearing up, teams set tough out-of-district matches in the preseason to test their players and gear up for district play. Be sure to head out to Santa Fe this Friday to support the Cougars as they look to hand Santa Fe its second loss of the season.
