The robotics teams are competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition district season, a series of multi-day events held across Texas where students design, program, and operate industrial-sized robots in head-to-head matches.
The district season began in mid-March and features events in cities including Fort Worth, Houston, and Waco. The Fort Worth District Event, held from March 19 to March 21, brings together dozens of high school teams from across the region. Throughout March, teams are engaged in volunteer work and will participate in the Space City at Friendswood District Event #2 on April 2 to April 4. Each event spans three days, starting with practice and qualification matches and concluding with elimination rounds.
During competitions, teams participate in timed matches where alliances of three robots compete to complete specific game challenges, which change each year. Teams earn district ranking points based on match performance, robot design, and judged awards such as engineering excellence and innovation. These points determine advancement to the FIRST in Texas District Championship.
Tomball ISD has established a strong presence in competitive robotics, with teams from several high schools consistently participating in district events and earning advancement points in previous seasons. Beyond competition, students manage all aspects of their robots, including mechanical design, coding, electrical systems, and strategic gameplay.
The district competitions serve as qualifiers for higher levels of competition. Teams that perform well advance to the state-level district championship, with top teams earning spots at the FIRST Championship, an international event held in April.
As the season continues, the teams will travel to multiple district events, competing against some of the top programs in Texas while gaining hands-on experience in engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving under pressure.
