In just their second year of existence, Tomball Mariachi has qualified for State competition after advancing from the area round on Jan. 28, which was held at Tomball High.
“I feel very proud of them,” Miguel Aguirre, Mariachi director, said. “These kids put in a lot of hard work. There are very few programs that, after only existing for a year and a half, have gotten this many opportunities. Directors strive to hopefully get a Division 2 at an area contest. But you know, being that these kids work so hard and being the director that I am, we reached and we worked hard to get that Division One. And so we’re going to work even harder for that Division 1 at state.”
With their director’s support to push each of his students to surpass their limits and to perform to their very best capability, which leads them to advance to the state. He will encourage them to perform to the very best, going beyond their capability, in order to achieve their new goals.
“It really is something special that we’re able to do something like this so early on in our just like mariachi infancy, if you want to call it that. We’re all very excited, and we’re all very eager to start this new beginning,” junior Aiden Kael said.
With success in mind and thinking of how special the moment is, it shows that even if it is a small program, there can always be a “new beginning” to something.
“I feel very surprised that we’re going to the state because, honestly, I didn’t really expect it, but since our teacher pushed us to be our very best, it became expected,” Senior Alvin Martinez said. “So now I’m hoping that we could reach our high level at State.”
Showing a mix of being shocked and ecstatic towards their performance because of how much they pushed past their limits, gaining them their first UIL area trophy. It shows that limits had to be pushed to pass.
“It feels really good because we’ve come a long way since last year, and now that we’ve come to the state, it’s very surprising, but also feels good for all of us because we accomplished a lot throughout the two years now,” sophomore Camila Reyes said.
With only a year and a half, it shows how much of a surprise it was for the kids, as it was an unexpected pleasure given their accomplishment.
Their next performance will be in Seguin, on Feb. 20 to compete for their first State trophy.
