Crochet Club may seem like a small, boring activity after school, but for many students it has become a place to relax, learn something new, and connect with others. The club is run by Lindsay Baccari, an English teacher who many students describe as supportive, creative, and inspiring. Her story and the environment she has created in Crochet Club make it more than just a place to learn how to crochet.
Baccari first started the club because she wanted students to have a fun and creative space after school. High school can be stressful with homework, tests, and activities, so Crochet Club gives students a chance to focus on something that isn’t a project due at 11:59. During meetings, students sit together, talk, laugh, and work on projects while learning new crochet techniques. Some students start with simple things and over time they learn more complicated patterns.
What makes the club especially fun is Baccari herself. In addition to teaching English, she is someone who has faced major challenges in her life, and many students admire the strength and positivity she shows after overcoming such a difficult experience. Instead of letting it stop her, she continues to teach, support students, and run exciting activities like Crochet Club that help bring people together.
“I wanted to create a space where students could relax and be creative,” Baccari said. “Crochet is something that takes patience, but it’s also really rewarding when you see what you’ve made.”
Students who attend the club agree that it is a welcoming environment and is a nice break from the busy school day.
“It’s honestly one of the most relaxing parts of my week,” said Colton, a member of crochet club. “You can talk with people, learn something new, and not worry about grades for a little while.”
Baccari’s positive attitude has had a big impact on the students who know her. When asked what keeps her motivated, she said that helping students grow is the most important part of her job. Her dedication shows students that passion for what you love can make a difference.
“Seeing students try something new and gain confidence is the best part,” she said. “It’s really about my students. Even kids from different grades can come together and just enjoy making something together.”
Crochet Club may start with yarn and hooks, but it has grown into something much more meaningful. Through Baccari, the club has become a place where students can express creativity, build friendships, and learn from someone who truly cares about their success. Her story of strength and her commitment to her students make Crochet Club a unique and inspiring part of Tomball High School
