Arrien Brody plays László Toth, who arrived in America from escaping a post-war Europe to rebuild his life as a visionary architect and to reconnect with his wife, Erzsébet, after being pulled apart by war. But this simple synopsis is truly an understatement to his performance. Arrien Brody’s performance as a Jewish Hungarian fleeing from Europe is a story based on the human experience of many and is complimented by his authentic and focused performance in The Brutalist.

I’m Still Here
Fernanda Torres gives a truly powerful and genuine performance as a mother living to rebuild her life after the harsh military dictatorship that impacts her family living in Brazil, 1971. What sets her apart from the rest of the other very talented nominees is the genuineness of her performance that is simple yet emotional in a big way. Her acting speaks to the heart in a very personal way to many, her performance not only tells the story but it is the story.

Also nominated for Best Original Score and Sound DreamWorks The Wild Robot is a surprisingly emotional and heartwarming story that has a beautiful hand-painted look achieved by a combination of CGI geometrical shapes. The story of The Wild Robot is one that tells of kindness and grief in a way that hasn’t been truly told before. This was one of the most watched animated movies of the year but, it is also important to make an honorary mention to Memoir of a Snail. This claymation movie is far from being watched as The Wild Robot but it has a great story with touching characters and a greatly executed mood that is also deserving of this award.

Nosferatu is a movie that has been made many times, its more famous being Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror 1922 and Nosferatu the Vanpyre 1979, all of them sharing the gothic story of a decrepit vampire obsessed with a young women. These movies also all share their unique and dark mood that is complimented by the beautiful cinematography. Nosferatu’s cinematography contains long shots that seem to observe the characters and execute a beautiful flow to the movie that perfectly executes the dark yet elegant atmosphere.
