The boys celebrate after advancing to the regional final.

With only 8 teams left out of about 200 in Class 5A from all of the state of Texas, the Cougars have clenched a well-earned spot in the final against cross-town rival Tomball Memorial as the next step in a great baseball season.

In district play the Coogs went 9-5 with an overall season record of 19-10-2. They have won throughout the playoffs to set up a showdown with Memorial with the state tournament on the line.

This team is going to lose 10 seniors to graduation for next year who have been big play makers and resources to the team’s run, giving the team a sense of urgency.

The Coogs were ranked 908th in the nation and 82nd in the state of Texas, according to Max Preps. Even though the Coogs were ranked fairly low, they have overcome many challenges, such as their battle against No. 4 state-ranked College Station.

On paper, it seemed as if the Coogs ultimately crushed College Station, but in reality it was a very heated game, and no one really was sure what the outcome was going to be.

It was a difficult situation getting into playoffs. The Coogs had to play Magnolia in a one game series to determine who would come out in second place and who would come in third place. The title of third is what both teams wanted because it allowed either team to play in a less difficult bracket to start play offs out in.

The only team that really caused us any harm was Brenham. Brenham’s overall national rank was 758 and there state ranking was 66. They beat us twice in district play, and they would of probably caused us trouble in play offs, if Tomball Memorial hadn’t knocked them out.

The series this week begins Wednesday at 7 p.m., here at THS. Game 2 is Thursday at Memorial, also at 7. If Game 3 is needed, it will be Saturday at 2 p.m., at College Park High School.

Both schools have graduation on Friday.
