Daily Jams: Oxymoron

oxymoron

Dirty, scrunched-up, head bobbing gangster rap, is just a few things that come to mind when you put on Oxymoron, where Schoolboy Q drops hard hitting beats perfectly suited for his lyrics about his life on the streets.

“Gangsta, Gangsta, Gangsta” comes blasting out your speakers when you put on the intro, offering just one more than N.W.A’s “Gangsta, Gangsta”. Right off the bat, Schoolboy Q shows off his tough-as-nails beats with lyrics that tell a story, or as he says it; his music “is real”.

Oxymoron could best be described as a cold cynical rap manifesto, where Schoolboy Q simply wants to explain his struggles both growing up, and as a father providing for his daughter.

Even though the cold-hearted gangster rap takes up most of Q’s work as an artist, “Oxymoron” is a very diverse album, ranging from tracks almost identical to Kendrick Lamar to more indie rap with a misanthropic twist, almost like Tyler the Creator (both Kendrick and Tyler are featured on the album).

With “Collard Greens” and “Man of the year” this album became a prominent sound of the hip hop stage in 2014, these are the tracks that makes you want to drive your car down a road, 2 miles an hour on a warm Friday afternoon,  head bobbing to the sound of summer, blasting through your stereos.

If you are a fan of any kind of hip hop, you should definitely check out Oxymoron.

If you absolutely hate all hip hop, you should also give it a try, because Schoolboy Q will probably change that.
