So you want to be a soldier?
For many students throughout America, the military is a prominent option for a lifelong career. Tomball has long been a fertile recruiting ground for the military, sending graduates off to boot camp every summer.
The military is not a career for everyone, there are disadvantages and limits, and students should take this into consideration before attempting to join. Many recruiters are readily available and students should feel free to talk to then to determine if the military is right for them.
If a student should choose a military career, they can start working towards it as early as their first year of high school. Though it is encouraged that they begin no later than senior year, as military recruitment programs mainly target seniors.
The first step would be to join the ROTC program. Despite the fact that one does not have to plan on military service to join, it can be a valuable for learning military knowledge and acquiring the skills necessary to succeed in joining. Also, if deciding to enlist, three years of ROTC can mean instant promotion upon completing boot camp.
While not all jobs in the military require strenuous physical activity, keeping physically fit is a requirement. And all services have physical requirements for joining.
It is vital that students who wish to join speak to a recruiter sometime, and can do so as early as junior year, the recruiter can answer personalized questions and help the student in mapping out a plan. Students can either find directions to a recruiter’s station or contact a recruiter, online.
As to education, a high school diploma is most desirable for enlisting. Students can also receive a GED, but it may cause limitations. Many who join to become officers enter a service academy first, such as the Naval Academy, or West Point. ROTC can help again here as the program can offer recommendations to the academies and provide scholarships. A Service academy is not required, another collage will suffice, but if a student wishes to go into a specialized field as an officer, graduating from a collage is usually a must.
