The Tomball Cougars come into the new year putting last year behind them as they just barely missed the playoffs as well as losing some key seniors.

They need to replace players such as running back Jaylen Johnny who rushed for 715 yards and 8 touchdowns last year as well as wide receiver Dane Taylor. Senior Army West Point Commit Cale Hellums says that they have started prepping the younger guys as well as the returners staying ready.

“We have dealt with [adversity] by having younger guys step up but also rely on the starters coming back to make an impact,” Hellums said.

With their first game of the year coming up against Willis, which they have beaten four out of the last five years gives them a bit of confidence coming in. “We know we have to stay focused and not let anything get to our heads,” Senior wide receiver Jayden Grey said.

Part of keeping that level of confidence also comes from working hard day in and day out.

“We go hard in practice and prepare for the games everyday,” Grey said.

“[We] add our new stuff or small adjustments in on Mondays, we work and improve on those the following days. Walk throughs on Thursday,” Hellums said.
