Sophomore sensation leads Cougars

Running from the 10 yard line to the 20, sweat drips off of his forehead; to the 40, muscles pumping with adrenaline; at the 70, the sound of blood pulsing through every vein in his body; 90, and then … touchdown! The crowd goes wild as Tybo Taylor runs a 93-yard touchdown, scoring again for the Tomball Cougars.

Taylor is a sophomore on the varsity football team playing quarterback, wide receiver, and safety. Early in the season, he ran a 93-yard, game-winning touchdown against Caney Creek.

“I felt like the team needed it, before the other team scored again, so I tried my best to get into the endzone,” Taylor said.

“Everyone was going crazy and I was thinking to myself, ‘Thank God for letting me make this play.’ It means a lot for my team. It felt good to know everyone was cheering for me.”

The crowd is often cheering for Taylor these days, but the road to becoming the best you can be is a long and difficult struggle without someone guiding you.

“Coach Ramsey has been very influential because when I do something wrong, he’s always on me and telling me to fix it,” Taylor said. “I think that’s helping me for my future.”

Guiding Taylor is a job Ramsey welcomes.

“You can get all up in his ear or get mad about whatever it is he did or didn’t do and he doesn’t change demeanor very often, and that’s invaluable” Ramsey said.

Impressive enough as it is to make a 93-yard touchdown, what is even more impressive, is having a sophomore on the varsity football team, especially while playing some of the most important positions.

“It’s not a small thing to be on the varsity team of any sport as a sophomore,”  Ramsey said.

Taylor hopes to continue playing football well beyond high school in order to help support his family, who believes in his ability to succeed.

“They support me in as many ways as they can,” he said. “They tell me to not get too cocky and stay humble.”

Growing up, Taylor was inspired by his family’s hardships and the work ethic of his mom, who is the reason he devotes everything he has to football.

“She is the motivation behind what I do,” he said. “We had a rough time growing up because my mom is a single mom, and that’s why I hope I can go pro, so I can take care of her.”

Don’t be surprised to see him playing on TV someday.

“He has a special something that is there and as long as he continues to have a mindset of learning, wanting to be better, and wanting to compete, the sky’s the limit” Ramsey said.

The future may be bright but for now, it’s all about the next game for the Cougars.

“As long as I’m playing football,” Taylor said, “I don’t really care about anything else.”
