Flight Feet: Track season underway
The season of running, jumping and hurdling is just around the corner. Some of the athletes transitioning from off-season football, cross-country and other sports are preparing for track.
With the season creeping up the track team will be looking forward to a new refurbished track.
To get ready for the season start running to build up endurance. Don’t forget to get to break in new shoes if it’s time to throw away the old ones.
“We go out there basically just pushing ourselves to the limit, breaking last year records…and personal goals,” A.J. Phelps said. “Personally for me trying to make it to state I went to regionals last year … and just going out there running all day.”
If you’re looking into track but don’t know if you want to join just know that running isn’t the only thing out there. The long jump is an event that does involve running a short distance and jumping as far as you can to win. Similar to the long jump the triple jump uses different methods.
Then there is pole vaulting; as it implies, it’s using a pole to vault or to lift you over and onto the landing mattress.
For those with bigger builds there is shot put and discus. Shot put is an event involving a cannon like ball with considerable weight that is thrown. While discus, involves a different throwing style and a disc.
But if you do like running, but aren’t the long or short distance type you don’t have to worry. Short distance like sprinting 40’s, long distance like the 1- and 2-mile are out there waiting for you to run them. If you want to run with a buddy the relay race is for you. Running to the next person passing on the baton right until the last person cross the threshold to victory.
To top it off if you like running and jumping but can’t decide on which is right for you then choose both. “Impossible” you say well hurdling is what it is called, an event that has obstacles with certain heights for you to jump or hurdle over.
