Bonnain perfect as Cougars top Wildcats
Stephen Bonnain pitched a perfect game as Tomball rolled over Tomball Memorial 2-0 on Tuesday in a key district game. Not one Memorial player reached base the entire game, which is a huge rarity in baseball.
“I am very proud of the way the boys have responded this year and have stepped up and become a team,” Coach Doug Rush said.
Bonnain was quick to share credit for his gem.
“I give all of the credit to Coach Rush,” he said. “None of that would’ve happened if it weren’t for him.”
Bonnain faced 21 batters and struck out 12 of them. The other nine flew out, popped out, or grounded out.
“Zach Walker made a really good play at 3rd base on the last out of the game to preserve the perfect game,” Coach Rush said.
In this one-of-a-kind game, Bonnain stayed relaxed and listened to his coach.
“Stephen had been pitching great all game and was pounding the strike zone like coach wanted him to. I told him before the game to give us strikes and we’ll give you defense,” Walker said.
“I just did what I do – throw strikes,” Bonnain said.
Josh Covey had two hits and Casey Smith had one for the Cougars. Joseph Messer had an RBI sacrifice fly.
The defending state champs finished the first half of district with a 7-0 record and are currently 18-3-2 on the season and ranked 6th in the state. None of those wins were as memorable as this one.
“The crowd went crazy,” Bonnain said.
