Tomball’s quest to return to the playoffs got off to a rocky start, as the Cougars were stopped at home by Katy Morton Ranch 32-17 in their season opener Friday night.
Justin Dvorak threw for two touchdowns and the Cougars relied heavily on the passing game, throwing the ball 53 times for 249 yards in the air. But Tomball could only gain 66 yards on the ground, 50 of those coming on scrambles by Dvorak.
Ranch was the opposite, throwing for only 60 yards but pounding the ball with 49 carries for 360 yards.
The Cougars travel to Jersey Village next Friday night for their first road game of the season.
