Field goal brings home big win for varsity
Within a matter of seconds the Tomball Cougars locked down the destiny of becoming 6-1 thanks to an impressive 3-point kick as time expired by kicker Dillon Duarte.
“I was in complete shock. And I wasn’t expecting 55 guys to come tackle me,” said Duarte, a senior.
The Cougars win against the Dekaney Wildcats was by far the most exciting game of the season. Fans were going wild and screaming “Best game ever!” and praising Duarte’s 40-yard kick.
The students and parents weren’t the ones interested in his mind-blowing field goal that redeemed the team from a devastating homecoming game the week before. Immediately afterwards Duarte was interviewed on a live local radio station and was later named the ‘Player of the Week’ by the Houston Chronicle.
Energy still high amongst fans and players, the bus back to campus was followed by a stream of at least 20 cars all honking their horns in praising the players.
“My inbox was full with new texts all congratulating me on the kick and win,” Duarte said.
He had became the big man on campus. Although his play was the most memorable of the game, the entire varsity team contributed to a game that proved critics wrong. Duarte agreed that the big win was a team effort.
“All I know is that I couldn’t have done it alone,” he said.
