It’s not like the competition going on at the U.S. Open. It’s not a “personal” thing anymore.
For a game that’s based upon individual performance, fall tennis has a complete different agenda.
It’s team tennis.
Tomball kicked off district play Wednesday against Klein Collins. Capturing 13 of 18 matches helped the varsity squad give its new members their first win.
Freshman Tyler Brewer had a victory in two sets (6-3, 7-5) which took two and a half hours to finish.
Sophomores Cody Willieford and Kevin Bohme easily breezed through an 8-3 match for the Cougars junior varsity team.
Senior George Rivers, a state qualifier last year, was in fine form as he won his match (6-1, 7-6).
Many losses were lost in tie-breakers. “We need to work on finishing our tie-breakers,” coach Kristopher Lee Hebert said of the multiple close matches that were lost.
The team’s next tournament will be held Sept. 7 against Westfield at home. Maybe a little fan support will go a long way to get the Coogs to finish the dreadful tie breakers with wins.
