After a hectic few of weeks of preparation, the THS chapter of the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) attended the Region 4 Competition last Saturday, November 12th.

The competition was an all-day event, as competitive events with participants from more than 25 schools, awards, speakers, and activities are all held the same day. Seven Tomball students participated in these events. Officers were required to compete, but other members decided to rise to the challenge.

The club’s President, Maggie Wolfe, who placed for the State Competition last year, decided to compete in various events this year. She competed in the Public Speaking Competition where she had to present ideas on how to solve a teacher shortage, the Portfolio Competition, and the Educators Rising Competition where she had to deliver a speech describing the moment she knew she wanted to be a teacher.

She received an award and a place in the State Competition with her performance in both the Educators Rising Event and Portfolio Competition.

TAFE Vice President, Sabrina Hernandez, won first place in both Impromptu Speaking and Public Speaking for the second consecutive year.

Treasurer and Historian, Daniela Roscero, participated with colleague Brooke McGarrah in the Ethical Dilemma and Bulletin Board Competition, as well as in the individual Creative Lecture Competition. McGarrah and Roscero placed for State in the Bulletin Board Competition, after presenting a board based on Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.

Secretary Colleen LaRue, a freshman, participated in the Bulletin Board Competition, as well as the Educators Rising Competition. She won her place in the State Competition in the Bulletin Board Event.

Ana Myers participated in the competitive Children’s Literature Competition, in which contestants have to write and illustrate a children’s story book. Despite not placing for the State Competition, Ana received a gift bag during the award ceremony for winning a game.

Dylan Morgan competed in the Creative Lecture and Impromptu Speaking Competitions. After getting a perfect score on the Creative Lecture Competition, he was one of the only two competitors from region 4 selected to compete in the State Competition.

This year’s TAFE Teach Tomorrow State Summit, where TAFE members may receive scholarship opportunities, will be held at the University of Texas at Arlington from February 16th to February 19th.
