Cougar Claw Exclusive: Sanders surprises Texas delegation
July 27, 2016
Each morning during the Texas delegation breakfast, various members of the delegation are asked to speak on important issues. This morning’s breakfast, however, was different.
In the midst of today’s meal, the audience erupted in applause as a special guest walked into the ballroom, surrounded by a herd of security guards. The guest was none other than Vermont senator and former presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders.
Sanders was greeted by a standing ovation and chants of, “Bernie! Bernie! Bernie!” The senator took the stage and joked that there were more people in the Texas delegation than in his home state of Vermont.
In his remarks, Sanders stressed the importance of what he called a political revolution and how happy he was to have the support of the youth. He suggested that “change” is long overdue in America, and he pointed out the importance, from his perspective, of voting for Hillary Clinton, as she will make those changes happen.
Less that twenty four hours after conceding defeat, Sanders threw his full weight behind Clinton’s campaign.
“Too often people think that the day after elections, politics ends. And that is one of the reasons that so many Americans become demoralized,” Sanders said. “We have campaigns and we have elections. The function of elections is not just to win, the function of an election is to transform this country.”
The senator’s speech earned overwhelming support from the delegation. Even though ⅔ of the party are Clinton supporters.
Today, in contrast to yesterday, the Texas delegation seemed united.
