Band Receives Sound Wave Lecture

Winnie Schubert, a representative of XTO (owned by Exxonmobil), gave an interactive presentation to Band today over the effects and uses of sound waves in her career field.

The band students were taught more about the sound waves that they unconsciously use throughout the year, and some of their more practical applications. Schubert gave a small, more personal lecture, that the students seemed to really enjoy.

“She gave a lot of details on how we can use what we learn in music to apply to the real world,” said Andrew Sanchez. “I found it interesting, and I think the rest of the kids found it really interesting as well.”

One of the main focuses of the lecture was how the band students used what Schubert was teaching to better play their instruments. Students learned how sound waves help them do more than play, but also tune their instruments and organize themselves so that the instruments don’t interfere with one another.

After the crash course on sound waves, students got to see how Schubert applied sound waves to her own profession. She gave a demonstration of how sound waves were used to detect pockets of gas and oil thousands of feet below the ground and ocean.

She then gave more information on the gathering and clearing process, and insight into her role in the company.
