THS loses a legend: Mary Roach passes

Mary Roach, who for more than 40 years was dedicated to “stomping out ignorance” as a teacher in Tomball ISD, died Friday afternoon.

Roach was popular among THS students despite her tough standards, and often would reach out to students in need of help both inside and outside the classroom. She was active with UIL competitions and was second only to superintendent John Neubauer in seniority in the district.

“I don’t think there was a teacher more dedicated to her students than Mary Roach,” newspaper adviser Jerry Fordyce said. “She was unique in every way, and sharp as a tack. I can’t describe how much I will miss seeing her every day at work.”

Roach died of a very aggressive form of cancer, Burkitt’s Lymphoma. Her doctor, Dr. Ewan Johnson, described it as the most devastating, aggressive lymphoma on the planet.
