Animal selection begins for FFA
This last weekend FFA students chose goats, pigs and lambs in the Ag barn. The students picked random numbers and then carefully observed the animals.
If the animal met the student’s standards it was taken and forcefully led out. The animals are not accustomed to human contact and tend to not want to cooperate.
But goats, pigs and lambs aren’t the only animals FFA has; there are also steers, turkeys, chickens, and rabbits.
This year the FFA show dates are Jan. 29-31. This is the first time the show will be over a three day period to leave room for goats, which is a new addition. Also new to the program is the special needs rodeo they will be hosted during the three-day period.
The students will take several months to raise and train the animals to be judged and then auctioned off for money. Last year’s auction’s grand champion winnings ranged from $3,500-$17,000.
If the students are unable to keep their animal in their own yard, they must keep their animals in Tomball Memorial’s barn, so even if you don’t have a huge ranch to keep your animal there’s always a way to participate in the raising of FFA animals for show.
