Rise of the Indie Films

In the past year independent movies have swiftly risen up out of film festivals such as Sundance and Tribeca. Led by 12 Years a Slave (grossing 37.9 million dollars), Blue Jasmine, and Rush, these movies are making their place in the industry.

A main reason for the growth in popularity could be that they’re able to convey very well put and complex stories that Hollywood has been shying away from.

While Hollywood spent $330 million on their top two movies in 2013, only $38 million was spent on the top two independent films.

Despite the hefty price of Hollywood films and the fact that they get more money from the box office, “indie” movies usually have better customer and critic ratings.

It seems that while Hollywood has recently been trying to make movies that look cool with graphics and well-known actors, indie films care more about expressing a story that captivates the watcher on a deeper emotional level.

Some intriguing upcoming movies this month include: The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (September 12), The Skeleton Twins (September 12), and Jimi: All Is By My Side (September 26).
