Now before anyone goes off on me, this is my personal opinion. Just like anyone else I’ve been through the stages of gaming, from simple computer games during typing class, to Minecraft, and finally to today where I waste most of my life playing Neverwinter on Xbox. Ok well maybe that last part is a ‘me’  but I think you get the picture.

Fortnite took the gaming world by storm starting back in 2017 and was quickly followed by Apex Legends.  The game has lasted through the honeymoon phase of new games and has even come out with a Chapter 2. However, when picking what game to waste time on I prefer Apex over Fortnite.

The most popular games currently are battle royale genre. Fortnite and Apex Legend being the main contributors. These are currently some of the most played games on console and PC (besides League of Legends). So why is it that these types of games became so popular?  Simplest answer is they are multiplayer games that constantly come out with new things.  Story games usually lose their charm after a single playthrough, the graphics and plot will be amazing but replaying the game isn’t really an option. Of course, some solo games offer changes in difficulty to spice it up but you’ve already seen the outcome of the story, why make it harder and play again when you know what happens.

Fortnite is a cartoon-like game that allows for solo, duo, and squad games. They also have specialized missions based on the season and allow for players to buy a ‘battle pass’ which opens up more missions along with in-game currency and skins.  That’s what I like about Fortnite, it never stays the same for long, there’s somewhat of an underlying storyline which can be entertaining (emphasis on the CAN).  What I don’t like about it is the building. No matter how hard I try I simply can’t get that feature down and it makes it greatly unfair. Another positive about the game is it has cross-platform play, however, as much as I love this feature I stink against PC players. I don’t know how they can attack and build so quickly but my joystick and I cannot keep up. It doesn’t help that third-person aiming is really weird for me. I don’t like being so far from the character when aiming. The new feature with “henchman” is slightly annoying. They are everywhere on the map and are blockheads. The first time I played after the update I died to one of those turrets and I had no idea what was going on. Fortnite is still a nice game but I just don’t enjoy it as much as when it first was released.

Apex Legends follows the same exact principles as Fortnite, for the most part. You get dropped off and fly down to wherever you want on the map and find weapons and try to survive. The main thing that differs is Apex doesn’t have is the building option that I talked about earlier. Apex also utilizes more lifelike graphics, it feels like a real battle royale. All you have is your teammates, weapons, and sliding. Those who only play Fortnite will never know the joy of sliding. It gets you downhill so much faster than just running. Being able to be revived and brought back after death is also nice. I’ll admit, I’m not the best at surviving past five minutes in these games and it’s nice for someone to simply pick up my banner and take it to a respawn station. Fortnite copied this feature from Apex, they didn’t add respawn until AFTER Apex came out in February 2019. Having stylized and unique characters is also a plus, each have their own ability such as Lifeline with her little healing robot and the shield that pops up when reviving someone.  It gives the characters more personality and reminds of another game I play, Overwatch.  You can master and build a team based on what they play and it makes the game much more interesting. The only thing I don’t like about Apex is the fact that you can’t play cross-platform, even if I don’t do well against PC player I like being able to play with my friends that don’t have an Xbox. The last thing, there isn’t a size option for teams, you only have three-person squads which doesn’t work for me since I have a total of three friends that I play with. If everyone is on we have to split up into duos with random third-wheels which can be very awkward.

Both Fortnite and Apex are well-made games, it just depends on your personal taste which one you pick. Even with the flaws, I pointed out in Apex, I just find it more fun and at the end of the day, that’s what it boils down to. Which do you prefer? Apex Legends or Fortnite, be sure to vote on the poll.
