The Cougar baseball team, trying to accomplish one of the most rare feats in high school sports by repeating as state champions, fell shy of their goal despite getting tantilyzingly close.
The Cougars held a 2-1 lead through most of the game but a disasterous fifth inning left them down 5-2. The team rallied, pulling within one in the bottom of the fifth.
In the seventh and final inning, the Cougars were able to string some hits together with two outs, loading the bases with three consecutive singles.
But the Cougars were unable to get that one more hit they needed, giving Kingwood the 5-4 win and the Class 6A State Championship.
