Tomball had it’s senior night last Friday, and they made it a memorable one, pulling off a late comeback victory over Cinco Ranch 31-25.
Tomball started the game off stagnant without much payoff offensively as multiple drives ended short and only three points were on the board for the Cougars at halftime.
Defensively the Cougars were able to get a few stops as they held Cinco Ranch for most of the half and took the game into halftime down 18-3.
Coming out of halftime the Cougars looked like a brand new team with a fire under them, as Tomball was firing on all cylinders and found ways to make plays time after time and outscored Cinco Ranch by 21 in the second half to win 31-25.
While they did put together a big win to move to 2-0, the issue was once again consistency. Though we saw a monster second half to propel this team to victory, it pales in contrast to the lackluster first half which left the Cougars in a big hole at the half.
Defense was the name of the game as the Cougars were all over everything Cinco Ranch tried to do specifically in the second half. Both on the ground and in the air, Tomball had an answer and forced 2 turnovers, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
Special teams as a whole looked better than last week as there were still two blocked PATs and also had an extremely important onside kick recovery to allow the Cougars to get one last drive which they would use to take the lead late in the game.
Although they didn’t look efficient in the first half, the offense found its footing and marched down the field to find the endzone multiple times in the second half. There was multiple chunk plays to give the offense big momentum and move the ball very efficiently and when it mattered most offense found ways to score in crucial moments.
Overall the Cougars put together a quality win but under the final score we see the night and day comparison between the two halves. When this team plays at its best it looks unbeatable, but they have to find a way to play at their best for a full game. When they do they’re going to be dangerous.
