For freshman Alexandra Acosta, Principles of Health Science (HOSA) is her favorite class. Health Science is based on studies of well-being, health, or medical care for human beings or those who are sick or unhealthy. Luckily enough courses like that are offered at THS.
“Right now we’re working on understanding health care systems and economics,” \she said, “I’m looking forward to learning first aid and client care.”
When she’s older, Acosta sees herself as a Sonographer. Sonography is a particular field of ultrasound technology. It focuses on using ultrasound images to diagnose, monitor, and treat diseases that affect the soft tissues. This often includes major organs in the body. She desires to attend Lone Star College to study Sonography.
“I chose to take HOSA this year because I thought it would be fun and I’m just really into health-related things this year,” she said. “It was the right choice for me because I want to work in the medical field.”
Being a freshman in a huge new high school means different opportunities. And different people. A challenge Alexandra faces is her introversion. But she hopes HOSA will bring her out of her shell.
“I know that people in the medical field deal with different people daily,” she said. “I’m determined to get out of my comfort zone and take on a new chapter of my life with Health Science.”
Alexandra takes inspiration from her older sister, Darien, who is taking Clinical for her junior year here at THS.
“I’ve always admired my older sister because she’s intelligent and hardworking,” Alexandra said. “I got lucky to have a sibling who’s been through this.”
Being in HOSA has rewarded Alexandra with friends and memories she’ll remember for life. And it’s not even the second semester yet.
