Balancing school, work can be tough

Balancing jobs and school can be tough
Many students work at the movie theater

High school can sometimes seem overbearing and overwhelming. This is especially true when a student attempts to balance successfully maintaining a part-time job with consistently doing well in class.

“Having a job during school builds responsibility within myself. I feel like I can rely on myself to do things, including get school work done. It takes courage and strength, but if you can do them both well, you are wonderful,” senior Taylor Polaniec said.

Although there are strong cases to be made for either working or not during school, school simply takes priority. And while many successfully maintain a good balance between school and work, they still agree that school should be put first.

“The key is not overwhelming yourself, and taking time off prior to a big assignment,” senior Matt Ezzelle said.

While school work must be maintained, teachers do recognize that the benefits of a job go beyond the paycheck.

“Jobs are a beneficial element of their lives,” teacher Rachel Clark said, “as long as student’s priorities are right, and the student realizes that education is more important than an income.”

School is a top priority and if work interferes with being successful academically then there should be changes made. An after-school job requires time management and organizational skills.
