The volleyball team played against Oak Ridge here Tuesday, taking on the team that beat them only a while ago at one of their tournaments.

Varsity won their first game 27-25, but lost the remaining three to Oak Ridge, with the scores 23-25, 23-25, and 20-25.

The team played well, with 26 digs from Brooke Green, and many good assists from Brooke Johnson and Marlene Pierce, whose numbers were 25 and 15, respectively. The hitters also did well, scoring many kills throughout the game.

The 9A freshman were off to a bit of a bad start for Tomball, losing to Oak Ridge. However, while they did lose the first two sets, they came close with the scores 21-25, and 18-25.

The first 9B freshman game was steady at first, with an even score of 18-18 before Oak Ridge caught the lead, ending the first half 21-25 with a loss for the Coogs.

The second half was off to a bad beginning when the score hit 1-9 with Oak Ridge in the lead before the Cougars had a chance to get the ball rolling. While they were able to catch up a bit, the overall score was 18-25, resulting in a victory for Oak Ridge.

Next, the JV team got off to a good start, with a close game all the way through to the end. Often, one team would either be a point off or even with the other until the last few points, when JV won the first half 25-23.

Unfortunately, the second half and final portion followed a similar pattern, with the JV teams lacking behind by a few points before ultimately losing to Oak Ridge in the end, marking their victory.

The next volleyball game will be this friday at Atascocita, with the team’s starting at 4:30, 5:30, and 6:30.

Oak Ridge is ranked as a much larger school than Tomball, and a common strategy has been to pit the Coogs against bigger and more selective teams to prepare for district. While the team may have lost today, they can try to take lessons from it.

“We’ve definitely learned from Oak Ridge and our past tournaments, we had a great practice yesterday and we’ll have one today,” said varsity senior Lauren Thomas. “Hopefully we can apply what we’ve learned and do well.”
