Cougars knock off key district rivals

Ridge Point and Stratford both entered the weekend unbeaten in district and tied with the Cougars for first place in varsity baseball.

Not anymore.

The Cougars came away with a pair of key district wins over the weekend.

On Friday night, they traveled to Ridge Point where both teams had 4-0 District 22-4A records.  The Cougars won that game 5-3 in 8 innings.  Casey Smith, Nathan Crowe, and Robby Vatuna combined for the pitching victory.  Matt Kirschke, Josh Covey, and Joseph Messer were the leading hitters.

On Saturday afternoon, Stratford came to Tomball to play with both teams standing at 5-0 in district play.  The Cougars won that contest 6-0.  Braeden Holub and Robby Vatuna combined to pitch a shutout.

Joe Breaux, Josh Covey, Robby Gillen, Joseph Messer, and Kyle Pasket led the hitting as the Cougars had 11 hits in the game.

The defending state champs are now 17-3-2 on the season and 6-0 in district.  Tomorrow night, they travel to Tomball Memorial for a 7 p.m. game.  Coaches and players are hoping for a strong turnout for the rivalry game.
