Rolling Coal

A new trend that emerged during the summer that is giving tree-huggers a run for their gas masks is the diesel powered campaign referred to as “Rolling coal”, a practice that involves the modification of diesel engines on pickup trucks to spit out large amounts of thick, black smoke.

Naturally, environmentalists have spoken strongly against this environmentally unfriendly act, now occurring more and more often.

Many people who do this have stated that their purpose is simply to anger cops or annoy walkers and bike riders. Though others take a more political stance, stating that the practice is a “giant middle finger” to environmentalists or an act of defiance towards nature protection laws.

Many viral videos, showcasing rolling coal have become immensely popular throughout the internet. These videos majorly include the use of the black plumes of smoke as a pranking device, spewing the smoke on joggers or even cops. Today, people pay anywhere between $500 and $5,000 dollars to make their trucks able to excrete what is also being called “Prius repellent.”

Though some argue that rolling coal isn’t as bad as environmentalists claim it to be, while these black toxins are unquestionably bad for the environment, they contribute only a small percent of present air pollution.

“Especially when compared to say, industrial factories, or deforestation, or the 3 billion coal and biomass cooking stoves that people are using worldwide,” said Grace Wyler, a writer for Vice.
