Understanding Student Media

Tomball High School has an abundance of electives, so that all students can find something that suits their interests. That being said, there are certain classes that may be of interest to many here at THS.

Students interested in the media and alerting people of important events should consider enrolling in Journalism, while photographers may find their niche in Photojournalism, and those who love to be in front (or even behind the camera) might consider Broadcasting. All these classes fall under the branch of “Student Media.”

Jerry Fordyce is the head of the THS Media Department. His classes offer an assortment of opportunities to better media skills that may come in handy even after high school.

Journalism class is writing heavy. The class focuses on writing stories for the school website and publishing them for the school to see. The class also works on creating video packages and practicing interviews.

Broadcasting is an introductory class, teaching the basics of  software and video projects. The class also covers sports and news for the morning announcements.

Photojournalism helps students to refine their photography skills. Students are taught how to use Photoshop and various types of cameras.

Once you take one year of Journalism, a semester of Broadcasting, or a semester of Photo Journalism, more advanced classes become available. Students, after completing the required prerequisites, can enter either Yearbook or Newspaper.

Yearbook is the class that designs the yearbook and help put it together. The staff takes photos and creates all content.

Newspaper is produces the student newspaper and will record/produce the morning announcements every Thursday.

The student media classes are great for those who like to get involved with the community and the school. These courses are not “blow off classes”, as they do involve hard work, dedication, and time. But despite the work, these courses are well worth it.
